Women's Perspectives on Elder Economic Security

As part of our "Blog About It: Elder Economic Security" event, we interviewed women on their views about elder economic security and asked them about what they will need for retirement, and how the economic downturn has changed their view about retirement security. Some women also shared their opinion on what can be done to make retirement savings easier.

I congratulate the National Elder Economic Security Initiative for this focus on 'women's perspectives on elder economic security.' Regrettably, more women than men are financially prepared for their retirement and elder years related to economic and financial needs. With the challenges facing this country with fewer guaranteed retirement plans and the incredible loss in individual retirement plans with the economic down turn, it is critical that dialogues such as this move forward.

It does seem to be the case that women are more financially prepared for retirement than men, and in fact better at budgeting and saving in general. Given the continued disparity between male and female salaries, one wonders what a difference it would make if equal pay were truly a reality. As a young 20-something, I am fairly certain that by the time I reach retirement age, social security will have run out and I'll be completely on my own for support. I've started investing in my company's matching 401k, which makes me feel a little better, but with the current state of the economy, I'm not really saving that much anyway. I applaud this blog's efforts to bring these issues to the forefront so that more young women are aware of what steps they can take to ensure financial stability as they age.

The Elder Economic Security Initiative is extremely important because 4 out of 10 elderly women have only Social Security as a source of income. Better security in older age means starting long before retirement, saving, and seeking out employment that offers pensions.

It would be interesting to poll young professional women on what they think they need to save for retirement, and other steps they need to take to secure their economic security.

Really great video! Kudos to Alisha and Stacy for making it happen. Maybe we should make this a tradition?..
